Event the Great ones have hard times

I have never had a female as my inspiration, but Chrissie Wellington has to be without a doubt my idol when it comes to Triathalons. This year in Kona she withdrew from the race, and below is her blog.

Chrissie Wellington unexpectedly withdrew from Ironman Kona this year, citing an illness she couldn't shake on race day. It broke a winning streak that had lasted three consecutive years for the Brit.
Mirinda Carfrae, the 29-year-old Australian who took second last year, ended up taking first this time around.
Wellington would not speak to reporters right after the race, but she recently wrote this blog for Outside to explain the circumstances surrounding her withdrawal:
"It was the best of times. It was the worst of times," to quote Charles Dickens. In my shortish sporting career I have had my fair share of both--the ultimate highs and some lowish lows--exhilaration and pride, frustration and disappointment. Three weeks have passed since the World Ironman Championships. It’s been an incredibly difficult few weeks, physically and emotionally--but my runny nose and sore throat is abating and the rawness of what happened is beginning to fade. But before I try and explain the decision that I made I want to start off with a huge congratulations to the amazing Mirinda Carfrae. Her performance was nothing short of remarkable. She truly is a worthy World Champion.
I’d like to quickly elaborate on how I felt leading into the race and why I took the decision that I did. I started feeling slightly ill on Friday lunchtime, with a sore head and throat. I did my usual three short sessions that day but, on the run particularly, I knew something wasn’t quite right. My legs were like jelly and I was sweating much more than usual. My tired head hit the pillow at 7 p.m., and I woke up several times during the night literally drenched in sweat, my head pounding and feeling like my throat was closing. I got up at 3:45 a.m., had a shower, and went through my pre-race routine hoping that I would feel better. But nothing improved. I knew I had to make one of the toughest decisions of my life.
Like all athletes, I invest my heart and soul into getting myself in shape for Kona. I have so much respect for the race, and the huge toll it can take on your body even when you are 100% healthy. It is demanding and brutal, and competing when ill risks exacerbating any health problems. Furthermore, I believe I owed it to myself and all the other competitors to be able to give the performance I had trained so hard for. I am committed to excellence, and I want to race knowing that I am able to call on my body to fight the hardest and best fight possible. So that morning I sought counsel from those closest to me, but mostly tried to listen to my body, and what it was telling me. I said to myself, if I woke up on an ordinary day feeling like this would I train? The honest answer was no. At around 5 a.m. the decision was made. There was no going back.
Those that know me will understand how incredibly difficult, frustrating, and heart-wrenching it was to make that call. That’s not to say it wasn’t heart-wrenching the next few days, which were some of the hardest of my life. I was angry, I cried, I wallowed in self pity, I threw toys out of my pram, and I wasn’t even well enough to drown my sorrows in an alcoholic beverage. I was upset at not being able to do justice to all the hard work I had put in, I was angry that something as simple as a common cold had sidelined me, I was frustrated that I couldn’t test myself against all the other girls, and most of all I was deeply concerned that in losing my World Championship crown I had in some way lost my voice and platform and would no longer have the amazing opportunity to inspire, encourage, motivate, and spread important messages.
But after these initial, and sometimes irrational, "toys out of the pram" reactions had passed, I have embarked on the more rational, pain-staking process of learning and growing that must always come from any disappointment or setback. As when I broke my arm earlier this year I was determined to use this as a force for good, as an opportunity to help me grow stronger and as something that would benefit me in the future, not just in sport but in my life generally.
Yes I could sit here feeling sorry for myself, reflecting on what might have been, but ultimately wallowing in self pity doesn’t help me, or anyone else. I will look to the future and all the opportunities it will bring--putting the events behind me and moving on to fight another day. This is sport. As I have always said, it has ups and downs. Highs and lows. It is a mountain I must climb. No different from any other I have climbed, and scaled, before. I know that whether or not I am a good, successful, and well-rounded person does not depend solely on my race performances. I am no longer the "World Champion" but I can still be a champion--on and off the course. I am not a machine. I am human. I fall off my bike, I get angry, I get frustrated, and I get sick. I am by no means perfect, but I am so incredibly fortunate to have already achieved so much in my life and I know that I might get knocked down, but I will rise up and be the champion that I want myself to be.
I want to give my deepest thanks to my amazing family, friends, and sponsors who have been with me every step of the way and to everyone around the world who has sent me messages of support and encouragement. I really do appreciate it. And, once again, my heartfelt congratulations to the two incredibly worthy World Champions, Mirinda and Chris [McCormack].
No looking back. Only forward. The journey to Kona 2011 begins here and the fire in my belly is already burning.

And we move forward

So much going on and learning so much as I go. My training is going well, but have had some setbacks on my Marathon Training. In the last month I hit a mental wall I finally got over two weeks ago. My training is mostly done during the week on a treadmill and around my home. On weekends, I like to stroll down Town Lake in Austin. The trail I typically run in is a 10 mile loop and for some reason anytime I want to go more than 10 I can never mentally do it. Basically, I don’t like to go around the same places twice, so when I finish my 10 miler, I am done mentally.
Because of this, I started to get concerned that I am not training properly and or I am just not improving. So, I decided two weeks ago to do a 14 miler in my neighborhood. The only bad thing is that it is very lonely and the scenery is not as nice. In any event, I decided to run in my neighborhood and had a decent run. I ended up getting over my mental block and so I went ahead and ran my 18 miler at home as well. For this run, I ended up having to walk a bit and ran very slow and in addition to all this the balls of my feet were killing me. The only good news was that my knees did not hurt at all. At the end of my run, I decided to take an Ice bat, and boy did that hurt.
This weekend, I get to scale down to only 12 miles, but I am going to go ahead and run 14 again since I was supposed to do 20 last week and only did 18. The last two weeks have been Christmas and so the food intake has not been good, and mentally I have not been there. Today I returned to the gym and just did not have it, so I rode the bike. Tonight I am going to scale down to 3 miles and tomorrow for a confidence booster I am running indoors on the treadmill so I can prove to myself I can go fast than I have been and let go.
This week is going to be a long mileage week, but I am ready for the challenge. In addition to my running I have started working on stretching more and more and also this week I incorporate weight training again. Biking, swimming and weights should really help and during weight training will be adding HIT training to help with my anaerobic conditioning. We will see how things go and the most important commitment this week and for two weeks is EATING GOOD.. This means no junk food and going to eat lean meats, veggies and most importantly the weekend I will NOT have a mental breakdown like I do almost all weekends. This will be for two weeks and lets see how I feel, plus I can lose the weight I have gained in the last week.

Today's workout

Back in the gym today, swim and stretch. Today's workout will be a fast one, but intense. Below is the gym workout and cardio. Today is my running day off, so have to get in some cardio and not run to shock my body.
Weights: HIT Training (High Intensity Training Day)
Non Stop, for time.
Stretch in Sauna for about 15 minutes
1A)
Squats (Light) 135Lbs X 15 reps
Jump Rope
DB press 65Lb X10

Jump Rope

DB Thrusters
Jumpe Rope
DB Curls
Dips
Jump Rope
Bike 5 minutes at level 25
Swim 1.4 Mile

In the afternoon, going to work on stretching and always do as many pull ups and push ups as I can while watchign TV. Will also be doing a bit of AB wheel exercises.

Onward.

1/3 of the way there.

I am closing in on week 7, and am almost there. The marathon training is going well, feeling a bit faster and the miles have started to increase. Only 11.5 weeks to go, and then its on. Before, Austin I have the 3M half-marathon.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to concentrate on swimming, biking and weights. My weights are down to about 1-2X per week, definitely need to step this up. The running has been consistent with the exception of Kobi's birth and being sick.
Moving forward, will be working on stretching and need to fine tune my routine and make sure I do not miss workouts.
As for diet and weight... the diet is up and down, and once I can get it down, i should start losing weight and increase my speed. Unfortunately for me, I have not been eating the best foods I could and so the weight has not quite gone down. I need to be at 185Lbs by race day, and I have been saying this for quite a while so this is a stretch.
The good side of this all is that I am feeling faster, but am losing mass so I have to choose my battles. Moving forward i will continue doing my High Intensity Training, will add a little swimming and 1X per week get on the bike. I have to truly want this and in order to achieve what I want, I have to want it more than anything else. Overall this will impact my life with my family and job. 1/3 of the way down, now its time to step up my game.

Week one in the record books, only 17 more

Yesterday I began week 2 of my Austin Marathon training and Week one was not as bad as I thought. The week ended witha brisk 10 miler out at Town Lake which I felt great afterwards. The pace was not the best, but was able to run the whole way and had a nice 9:30ish pace. This week, the schedule is virtually the same, but have an 11 miler on Saturday. Looking forward to my run and also this week will be the first time in a long time that I will not have a day off. On Sunday, i am going to be doing weights and will either swim or bike to supplement my weight training.
In the last 4 months since not running much, my HIT training has really helped out my running along with swimming and cycling. I have been using new muscles that I have not typically used before and have been able to improve. Stretching needs to improve and I need more time dedicated to stretching and need to incorporate some Yoga to the training.
Currently the weight training is going to be 2-3 days a week until week 13 when I will run about 56 miles. Ouch!
The two days have begun, now need to improve on my diet, start eating cleaner and more food throughtout the day.

Back again, Goal Feb 20th 2011

My eyes are on the Austin Marathon Feb 20, 2011 and I am locked in. Yesterday was day one of my Marathon training and it was not easy. Never thought 3 miles would be tough and all I could do was wonder, how in the world am I going to be able to finsih 26.2 miles. I still remember the pain and agony I went through last year in SA. The feeling of wanting to quit, the fact that I walked for a while, but at the end of the day I remember I was able to finish and at a good time. This year I hope to have learned from my 2009 first marathon and not only improve on my shortcomings but build on this and improve my time. My goal is 3:59:59 and with the right training and diet I can do it.
The first goal is going to be the 3M Half marathon and my goal is going to be around 1:50 or less. Anything under 1:53 I would be happy with. For now, the training has begun and looking forward to seeing what I can do this year.
So, Monday started with a 3 miiler and I ran inside where I will be doing most of my weekly runs. As I run on the treadmill I am running at an incline and increase and reduce my speed. Today was my 5 miler and so I was able to pick up the pace at the end to finish in 46:00 minute exactly. Outside I should be under 43 minutes as running at an incline greatly makes it more challenging and I am not able to go as fast.
Today at lunch I will be going back to the gym for Weight training. My training with weights will be 2-3 days per week. In addition to weight training I will be riding my bike at least 2X per week, swimming and doing Hot yoga once a week.
Hoping to be able to knock out my workouts in teh AM and then 3-4 days per week doubling up. the road is long, but if I want to accomplish my Goal I need to be focused and locked in.

And it has begun again..

After a long break and weak workouts, it has begun again. today was day one of a solid two weeks, and then I begin marathon training again. for the next two weeks I plan on eating solid, and working out 6 days a week. today in the Am, I hit weights followed by cardio, an easy two miles running at an incline and prior I did a quick 10 minute weight workout. The workout consisted of 50 body squats, 10 pull ups, and 10 snatch and presses 3X non stop. As soon as I was done I jumped on the treadmill and set the incline at 2% for the first mile and 1% the second mile. Felt great today.. Now, need to also eat good and we are good.
On October 4th, we start Marathon training. This year we will be running the Austin Marathon and in preparation will also be running the 3M. Hoping to beat 1:50 for the half and approximately 4 hours for the full. Have a lot to prove to myself after running my first Full Marathon in 09 in SA. In order to get there have to lean down and work on the core.
Today at lunch, swimming time. going for a full mile.

What has been going on for the last month?

Since completing my last Tri I started Training for my next Tri, the Jack and Adam's Tri on August 1st. My training has not been the best, but i have gotten some good swims and bike rides in, unfortunately the runing is where I have slacked, but I have or believe gotten stronger in the other disciplines. Recently I had my longest bike ride at 40 miles and I felt good, other than my neck getting stiff. Also, had my first Mile swim and that felt amazing. Luckily, I have ran more than the 3 miles so I should be ok there.. Also due to the biking and swimming, my running should hopefully be improving too.
The Tri will be here in no time, and so it is train train train..

What we can achieve.

What a great father's day weekend I had. I spent time with my family and my girls and really enjoyed the time we had together. On Saturday I did absolutely nothing and truly relaxed as I had my Tri on Sunday. Sunday was here before I knew it and as usual I did not get much sleep, but it is expected.
I woke up Sunday at 5:05 Am, got me some coffee and the morning and started my routine. I stretched for about 30 minutes and around 5:50 I made me a smoothie full of veggies and fruits. We left the house at 6:00 and got the event around 6:15. To my amazement it was already packed with athletes.
All week my goal was to beat my previous time last year of 1:30 but I was doubting myself because I was in much better shape last year and I worked harder and was more prepared than this year. Unfortunatley, my training has not been where I would like it to be this year, but at this point all I could do was my best.
Last year a good friend of mine, George Jones told me to take it all in and enjoy the hard work. So, this year like last year I was soaking it all in and was loving every second of the event.
The event quickly started and we were off, I felt really good on the swim and came out the water and headed to the bike. Got on the bike and was also feeling really good, peddaling well and not getting too tired. The true test would be after the bike, and my legs. Once i got off the bike my legs were a little tight but I fought through it. Being that I knew what to expect this year, that really helped out a lot.
Around mile 2, the cramps kicked in and i was hurting... However, I slowed my breath and concentrated and kicked it up a notch. once I started hearing people, I stepped it up and finished strong. To my amazement I killled my time from last year. I finished at 1:22, and so of course I started to think what I could have done better to have finished in under 1:20.

I actually knew I would beat my time when I got ouf of the water, and I was no longer doubting myself. I was looking at my watch for my pace and when I got off the bike I knew unless I got hurt I would shatter my time last year. The mind is a beautiful thing, and if you truly believe you can do something, you definitely can. Next year, 1:15 is my Goal and a top 10 finish.. Until then, lot of training.

Taper week.

This is it, two more days until "Go Time".. All the hardwork is about to pay off. I have been taking it easy this week and have not been doing much. I did a simulation TRI on Wed and it went well. Yesterday I did absolutely nothing and today I may swim or stretch. Tomorrow I will be hydrating myself as much as possible and will be definitely stretching out.
Sunday will be here in no time and I am ready to go. I am shooting for a goal of about 1:20 to complete the TRI. After Sunday I am taking Monday off and then on Tuesday the training begins again for Jack's Generic Tri on August 1st.

5 days and counting..

All the hardwork is out of the way and it is time to do my simulation run tomorrow and then relax the rest of the week or simply not work as hard. This am I got me a good half mile swim, easy weights and will be running tonight. Tonight, heading out for a run or an easy jog. Tomorrow I am running a simulation TRI and will be doing all the disciplines at P-Ville lake. I am really excited but nervous, only really nervous about not beating my time from last year. Regardless if I do or dont, I will give it all I have and hopefully will do better than last year. After tomorrow, I am plan on doing a lot of stretching and easy swimming and one last light jog at Pville lake.

I can see the Finsish line and am looking forward to it.

And it continues..

Counting the days until TRI time and the workouts have really picked up. My body is feeling it and I am in need of a rest day, but not just yet. I am taking probably Sunday off and then will go strong for 2 days, easy one and then rest until the TRI.
Today is weight day, and I continue with my weights, but will be adding a 3 mile jog to the mix, which should be a lot of fun. Following my weight workout and run, I am heading to the pool for a swim and hopefully if the weather holds up today, a bike ride at night.
Tomorrow thursday I am hoping to get out and ride, swim and run depending on the weather. This Saturday is my simulation Tri, and next Wed which will be my last hard workout before taking a few days off to rest and recover.
My body feels good, however I feel run over and bruised, but this is the time when I need to fine tune my conditioning. I have also been eating a huge amount of food to make sure I have plenty in the tank.

Less than two weeks out, am I ready?

So far so good on the TRI Training, less than two weeks to go and I feel pretty ready, but not 100%. I could use some more running as I have not been running much, and instead have been concentrating on riding and swimming. I hope that all the running in the past will help me once I get off the bike and start running.
This week has been pretty intense and I will be spent after this week, but the good thing is that next week is taper off week and i will only be doing one of the disciplines per day so that will take a lot of stress and effort away.
This morning, went on the trail and rode it in a good time with my training buddy. Meant to swim prior but did not get a chance so tonight I will be swimming roughly 800meters indoor. tomorrow, I have weights in the AM along with a 2-3 mile run (Indoor), and in the PM will ride and possibly swim again outside.
I plan on taking a break probably on Sunday but will make sure that i stretch a lot. I also am planning on doing some YOGA either hot or standard Hatha. Got very important training and days ahead of me before I taper off.

The Ride Continues

What a weekend of training, it was a well needed weekend that allowed me to get in some serious training. This past weekend I was able to concentrate on my weaker points, biking and swimming. Swimming is somethign that you tend to lose really quickly along with everything else. Two weeks ago, i was gased after 200M, and now I am back up to 800M swims. last year before the Tri I was getting up to 1200M at a good pace. Since I had not swam much, I really felt the pain of not swimming.
The biking I have been impressed with, my endurance, strenght and speed has gradually increased. I am knocking out hills a lot easier than last year. Hopefully I can get some good runs in this week.
This week I also begin a new weight routine for the next month. I am planning on getting out for a ride 2-3X per week with at least one long ride per week. Swimming will continue at 4-5 days per week. Most workouts are around 400-600M, with one long swim per week, probably going to be Fridays. The running I plan on running 3-4X per week and having speed work in between, 4-10 400X runs.
The weights, a key part of my training will continue to 3X per week.
Today, I have decided to take the day off, my body is aching and I have to listen to my body before I see a decrease in performance. So, today the keyword is REST REST REST!!!

Congratulations Spartans/ettes

I wanted to congratulate you all once again on your remarkable accomplishments over the last month. Every single one of you smashed your previous times and have greatly improved your conditioning. Keep up the good work and continue working hard at whatever your goals may be. Your goals may be gaining weight, losing weight, running a 5K, marathon or half, and so whatever it may be, keep at it. As you can see based on your times yesterday, all you have to do is practice and believe in yourself.
I would also encourage you to join Laura and Donnie on Mondays and Wednesdays as they will continue working out. Maybe after Momma feels better we can pick it up again. For those of you who may want to workout more often, you can always reach out to Justin Gerrard, who came out Day one of the workout-a-ton as he has a 3X per week camp he runs. If you are at Gold’s Gym anytime around 7:00 AM, you can always join me for some weight or cardio training, always glad to have someone to workout with.
Lastly, thank you so much for the card and the awesome gift card. I will put the GC to use and buy some more gear for our next camp, and pick up some Tri equipment. More than anything, your words meant so much to me.. I am glad I was able to make a small difference in your fitness.

The Final Workout

Today is the final workout of the season and we will be doing our last test. I expect a lot of times to have decreased from the first test. For those folks who were not at the first test, I will pair you up with people at your fitness level, their previous times and your final time today. I believe Mr Donnie Phelps will continue driving the bootcamps so for those of you who want to stay active, you can reach out to Donnie.
At my end, I am 3 weeks out from my Triathalon and I am going to be hitting the pavement really hard the next few weeks and will be working heavily on my cycling and swimming. My weight conditioning begins and most of the weight workouts I am doing consist of heavy weights and cardio.
i will be posting my workouts as frequently as possible, so again feel free to use the workouts and tailor them to your needs.

Less than one month away, training underway.

My second Triathalon is less than one month away and for the next three weeks, my workouts are going to get pretty intense. I sit here at 5:30 Am on a Saturday, preparing my workout routine so that i can get my workout in, and spend time with my family.
Today's workout starts with 30 minutes of stretching followed by a 3 mile run outside. Once I am done with myrun, I will be making one of my world famous smoothies.. I plan on riding shortly after for about 20 miles. This should take me an hour and a half which is the time it will take me to complete my Tri.
The workouts I will be doing may not be all the Tri disciplines, but what I am going to concentrate on is making sure I am working out for the same or more time the Tri is going to take me to complete.
Hopefully, if there is time after my ride, I will be going to the local HS and will be doing Tire Flips along with Tire Jumps. Tire Flips consist of picking up and flipping a 150Lb tire up a hill. Then, after you flip the tire, you jump over and into the tire and out of the tire and then jog back around.
After flipping tires, I will be then jumping on to the tire which is about 36 inches high. To perform this, you jump as high as you can and lift your legs so that you can add height to your jump.
This should make for a nice morning workout... Possibly, later today, I would love to get in some pool time.. Tomorrow, I wil follow up today's workout with pool and biking.
Onward.

Nothing but Heart!

First of all I want to express how proud of you I am.. I really did not think the workout would be as tough as it may have been for you. I knew it would be longer, but did not think it would be as challenging for you. With that said, I really saw a side of each and everyone of you I had not seen before. I saw tons of heart from you all. I was incredibly impressed.
As you know, next week we are bringing Camp to a close, and will have a final test next week. However, I would like to assign you all one homework assignment between now and Monday. I would like for you to do something you have normally done in the past and enjoy like running, biking, swimming etc. If you are a runner, please go out and run one mile and time yourself. I want you to see how much you have improved. I guarantee you that you will run your first PR (Personal Record)..
For those of you who missed the TEST on May 3rd, I am going to find a way to either pull past tests, or give you a time based on your abilities.
Please try and take a day off on Tuesday of next week or do a very easy workout, stretch, swim, etc.. Please do not go crazy working out on Tuesday. I want you all to be 100% so you can really see your improvement in the short 3 weeks of our workouts. Get as much stretching as you can, and on Monday I promise promise the workout will not be very tough or long. We will do a bit more stretching, light jogging and basic drills.
Again, you all Rock and cant wait to see some times get smashed next week.

**ON a final note, I start my TRI training (Hardcore) on Monday and will be updating my Blog with workouts, so feel free to use them once we are done and tailor them to your abilities and effort level.

Day 4&5 Workout-A-Ton!

Day four was Yoga at Yoga Groove and a big thanks to Cosmo and his gang for their support. The Yoga session was great and we had some first timers in my 6:30 session with Nicole (First time ever to attend any Yoga session) and Alicia and Denise who experienced Hot Yoga for the very first time. I believe Yvonne also enjoyed her first session along with Davis and Amy at the 5:30 class. A job well done to all.. All the girls in my class rocked it out, and did great.

On Day 5, the "fun" day, we went to Krav Maga, and the fun went out the window very quickly. For some reason Kerri decided to beat everyone up, but made the workout very fun and challenging. I personally have never attended a Krav Maga class, and so the kicking was new to me. I truly enjoyed the workout and currently I can not feel my hands. Hopefully, soon I can follow up and pick up some Krav.
Tomorrow is day 6 and the final day of the Workout-A-Ton, we wrap things up with POSE and Dr Mike. Pose has helped me personally with my running and hopefully will help me even more tomorrow.

A big thanks to everyone this week, with your generous contributions we will have raised over $1500.00 for March of Dimes, that combined with 7K at the Golf tournament, 10K will almost have been raised.
A big Thanks to everyone that has participated, generously donated and have contributed their time and efforts to come out and teach classes. Thank you to Justin Gerard, Corp Fit, Rich Stone at City Blends, Dr Joe Henry Rodriguez, Massage Envy and Jim, CrossFit Round Rock, Krav Maga and Kerri K, Dr Mike M, Yoga Groove and Gold's Gym.. You are all wonderful..

Looking forward to the final day, hope we have yet another great turnout like the past week.

Crossfit Wed

Day 3: Crossfit Wednesday

Halfway done, today's workout was fantastic. A very special thanks to Brannon from Crossfit and Jim from Massage Envy for coming out and supporting March of Dimes. We had a wonderful workout again today, very short but very intense. Those eighteen minutes felt like two hours, but they were fun. It is always nice to wind down with a nice sports massage like we had today. Make sure to go see Brannon at Crossfit and take him up on his offer to try Crossfit out, they have some incredible workouts and great Diets..
Tomorrow for Day 4, we get to relax or sort of relax.. Tomorrow is Hot Yoga, and do expect to sweat, and feel very relaxed afterwards.

Look forward to seeing you all at Yoga Groove tomorrow.

Day 2, Corp Fit Day!

Today was day two of the Workout-A-Ton and we had Corp Fit come out and do their thing. The workout was a fantastic stretching/Core workout. Thank you so much for Corp Fit for coming out and hope everyone enjoyed the 5 minute massages compliments of Massage Envy. A big thank you to Jim for coming out and relaxing people as they worked out hard today.

So, so far this week we had Justin's bootcamp which increased the blood and got the heart pumping, then topped it off with core/stretching followed by short intense intervals tomorrow when CrossFit comes out. Should be a fun exciting day tomorrow... After tomorrow, the YOGA is going to come in handy, it is going to be a good way to stretch out the muscles, relax the body and get ready for Krav..

We look forward to seeing everyone out tomorrow, going to be another fun day.

Workout-A-Ton Day 1 underway!

2nd Annual Workout-A-Ton Day 1
Today was day one of the 2nd annual Spartan Workout-A-Ton and we had a great turnout. We had about 20 people show up today for Justin's bootcamp and Justin did not take it easy on anyone. The workout was about 40 minutes and was a bootcamp style workout, ending up with abs.
Tomorrow we continue with a double workout. We will have a core, stretching workout and then afterwards we will finish up with an optional 300 workout. The week has just started but there is much fun awaiting you.

As mentioned, we will have a raffle at the end of the week where I wlll pull names from a hat. You will get one entry per day you attend, and you can only win once. The names that are picked first in the event of double winnings, will be allowed to pick the prize they like. Should be a fun week of working out, see you at the battlefield.

Camp for Wed April 14th

First of all I want to say how proud I am of each and every one of you.. Monday was a fantastic day and a true sign of what you have been able to accomplish with your own workouts along with the Spartanette camp.. First of all, a Big congrats to Crystal and Katy.. Way to go Katy on your first 10K and Crystal for shaving a whopping 9 minutes off your time.. Then we have Leslie, who dropped and knocked out boy pushups. Wow! You already have come a long way since day one.. Laura, WOW!! Really, a real pull-up? And finally, Joe (aka, Josephina) who was rocking out pull ups. Since last Feb, I have seen a huge transformation not only physically, but mentally and cardio wise.. I am just amazed.. Great job everyone.

Oh, btw we are on for camp today.. However, lets try and meet at 6:00! I have my fund raiser tournament tomorrow and today is a very very busy day.. In the event of rain, we are going to probably cancel today.. I will keep you all posted.

Camp is on Monday!

This Monday is going to be Test #2. The test is going to be slightly more challenging than last months and so will be the final 3rd Test.
The new few weeks are going to be nuts with all the fund raising events: MOD Workout-A-Thon, and the Golf tournament. In addition, my own personal training has started for the June Pflugerville Tri. I am also so proud, my wife will be attempting her first Tri. I am hopeful that my Spartanettes will also give it a go..
The workouts next month are going to work on developing stamina and completely breaking down muscles past exhaustion in an effort to simulate a Tri. When you combine these workouts (short and intense) with Diet, pounds melt away and stamina goes through the roof.

Wheels are in motion 2nd Annual Workout-A-ton

The official invites have been sent and our partners are lined up. This is going to be a great week of working out and fund raising. I look forward to seeing all my previous Spartans, and new Spartanettes at the workout-a-ton! The emphasis and focus of the fund raiser is to try and do different workouts, and everyday do something different. I have not decided if this year we are doing 6-7 days. I may lock in a 7th day of Spinning, but this is the only thing I have not set up yet.
We will be having CrossFit come out, Justin's Boot Camp, Bikram Yoga, Dr Mike with his Pose method of running, and special guests coming out to talk to us about Nutrition, supplements, and spine posture.
Stay tuned for more details.

Test #1, over, now the fun begins for the Spartanettes!

Great job by everyone yesterday, everyone improved 2-5 minutes from last month's test. Also, being that it was so cold, the Spartanettes would have had improved times above the already improved times. Kudos to Mary for reducing the most amount of time, she is ramping up nicely and quickly. Also, the youngesters Laura and Katy really really did well, they both improved by over two minutes and their workout was a bit challenging. Girlie and Amy also improved their times and made it look easy.
I honestly felt that after the challenge yesterday no one was really challenged. Everyone looked like they could have done the test again. So, what does this mean? Well, this means that everyone can expect the next challenge to be a bit more difficult. It is funny how much everyone improved has improved from last month. I have enjoyed watching all my girls bust butt and get better at everything. My new task for my two elites is "Pull ups", and for my B-Team speed and strenght is my goal.
Our training is going to intensify a bit, the Dungeon workouts will get tougher, the runs longer and I plan on making sure everyone improves their speed and strenght. Also, working on endurance, speed and strenght will help if you plan on competing in any 5K, 10K's Triathalons, etc.
As mentioned, tomorrows camp is off, but plan on picking it up again on Monday rain or shine. Lastly, welcome Crystal.. You did great and look forward to you joining the Girls AKA Spartanettes.

The long Road, another task accomplished.

I can remember 7th Grade, going out for Football. We were tasked with warming up by running two laps around the track which is less than 800 Meters. I remember I felt like it was the hardest thing I had ever done and was lucky to finish the first lap. I remember I used to think how awesome it would be to be able to run the whole two laps.

Times have changed, and sometimes you have a mental block you need to get over. My mental block back then was finishing the two laps.

As time has gone by I have ran a lot more than those two laps, but there has been a mental block when I run, how fast can I really go? My goal this year was to complete the 3M marathon in under 2:00 hours. I did not think I could do it eventhough my conditioning told me I could. I went for it on January 25th and I knocked it out the park.

All I wanted to do was finish in under 2:00 hours, and when I had one mile to go, I need to finish it within 13 minutes which is relatively easy. As I got closer and closer to the end, I knew I had done it so I took it all in and felt as if I was in a parade. The excitement and accomplishment was incredible. My training has changed and I have been able to get faster and increase my stamina. Next goal for 2010 is a few Triathalons and then I am going to finish the year off with either the NYC marathon or the Chicago Marathon... I am shooting for a time of about 4:00 hours. Lets see what happens, this is not two laps around the track, but pretty close mentally.

Taper Down Week.

A few more days until my half marathon and I am as ready as I am going to be. This week I plan on getting in a lot of stretching and one more light jog. On Thursday and Saturday I plan on doing Yoga to make sure I am fully stretched out before Sunday. This year I am shooting for a time under 2:00 hours and should happen, just have to stay focused and make sure I keep track of my pace. Last week on my trial run I ran a time of 1:47 for 12 Miles and so if I can keep up that pace I should be able to run a 12 minute mile or less for the 13th mile.

The Rise of Spartanettes 3

Back again for Season 3 of Spartanette Training, and am looking forward to seeing everyone again. Monday will be a "Test" day to meausure everyone and see what their conditioning is looking like. We will be performing "The Test" AKA 300. The Test will be the first of three tests and of course the easiest. The goal is to decrease your time after 30 days of working out. The two days per week camp helps, but in order to truly maximize progress, Spartanettes need to make sure they are getting some cardio and weight training on their own at least two more days. A total of 4 days per week is ideal, and people truly see results. The single most important piece of the training is DIET. I can not stress enough how important Diet is. By working out and doing cardio you will definitely see improvement with your cardio and heart, but not on the scale. You can be a very fit (Cardiovascular) person, but not fit (Appearance) or scale wise. By eating the correct foods, it not only helps shed those unwanted pounds but also helps with Energy.
I have tested this method on myself by eating GREAT over the weekend and having GREAT workouts on Mondays. However when I break down and eat poorly and drink alchol, my workouts truly suffer. The cleaner I eat, the better I feel and the better workouts I have. Because I am currently training for a Half marathon and future Triathalons I have to rely greatly on carbs, and lean proteins. I have been following The Zone Diet and this tends to work for me. There are many diets out there, so following what works for you is the best thing to do.
Looking forward to Camp on Monday..

Speed Work (Indoor and last one)

In an effort to run faster in my half, I have been working on speed work and have seen improvement. This is not the funnest of workouts but I believe they have been effective for me. I started this morning workout with a weight workout, supersetting body parts which is normally a typical workout for me. The workout today looked like this:
Warm up/Stretch
Good morning/Side to side leg Raises/Swiss Ball Roll 2X15
Bench Press/DB Pick up/Plate lifts
Flys/Arnold press with curl into Tricep extensions
Then jumped on the treadmill and ran 10X400's resting 30 seconds between set. The treadmill is set at 3% incline and 7.5 MPH which is about an 8 minute mile.

Head to work and eat..

My long run, Indoor!

This weekend was my long run, a cool 11 miles and because it was so cool outside I decided to run indoor. I do run on a treadmill but normally not more than 5 miles, that is about max. This Saturday, i went a cool 11 miles inside and it was not too bad. When running indoor, I can better pace myself and add more of a tempo run than running outside.
I started my run at a 3% incline and 6.1MPH. Our treadmills are set up where you can see a picture of a track and so on the turns I normally increase the speed and then decrease on the straightaway. So.... as I started so slow, I felt sluggish and decided that on my very first turn I bumped up the speed to 7MPH and then back to 6.1. From there I changed the speeds and after my first mile I reduced the incline to 2.5% and gradually decreased the incline and increased the speed. Towards the end of the run I was at a 1.0% incline and alternating between 6.8MPH and 7.5MPH. At the end of the run I did my last 400M at a 9MPH-12MPH for the last 200Meters. Overall it was nice to run on the treadmill and best of all stay warmp.
Tonight, I am hitting the pavement for a cool and I do mean cool 5 Miles.

Wow! Plyo-Endurance FRIDAY!

Wow, new limits this morning, we did out plyo/endurance workout and it was something else. 32 minutes of non stop action, and pain. The workout was posted yesterday, and it was not a lot of fun.
The workout progressively got tougher and tougher and the icing on the cake was the Rowing, 500 Meters in less than 2 minutes. 1:46 to be exact, which is now my PR. The best I had done before was 1:57 and I could have shaved a few more seconds. My goal is going to be 1:30 by the summertime. I also need to add a second set for true fun and pain.

In addition to the rowing being tough, I never thought the Bicep Curl and Tricep Dips would be so tough. I was gased at this point.
This will be the only workout for the day, and tonight will stretch and Girlie is getting her workout in. Tomorrow, got a cool Frosty 10-11 miles. Lets see how that goes, I hope it is not too terribly cold, but I think and know i will be wrong.

Back in the saddle, 70%.

Feeling better and getting back in the gym. I have been eating clean, but for some reason the pounds are not coming off like I would expect and like. I finally got a chance to run in my new shoes and they are great. My new Brooks Launch sure make me feel fast. I ran a pretty decent 5K the other day at 25:33 and could have gone faster. Today at lunch, I tested my mile and came in at 7:16.. This was the easiest 7:16 I have ever ran. It also helps that I had no incline and I have been running at a 3% incline.

I am really looking forward to tomorrows workout, I plan on doing a cardio/endurance/strenght workout. I will be performing one minute reps super setting with one minute of jump rope. Each exercise will be for two sets or a non stop 4 minutes.. The workout will be:

Squats/JR (one minute each for two sets for all except Biceps and Triceps)

DB Chest Press/JR

KB Swing/JR

Pull up paired with Burpee/JR

DB Step ups/JR

Bicep curl paired with Dips only one set and then JR

At the end of the workout will be the high endurance portion of the workout, we will be getting on the rowing machine and will row 500 Meters in less than 2 minutes. This will really really get the heart pumping.

This saturday is going to be a long run, going for an 11 miler, got to get ready for the 3M..

The start of a new year!

Well, what a start.. I have been sick most of the year, and have not been able to get going this year. I went out for my first run on Saturday and allergies kicked in and had a lousy run. Sunday, i was lazy all day and then Monday and Tuesday I was laid up, sick with allergies. Erghhhh..
Today was my day back to the gym, and I was not feeling too hot so I decided to do a quick weight workout along with a little biking. At lunch I plan on going for a 3 miler, lets see how that pans out. I am excited to wear my new shoes, I recently ordered the Brooks Launch and you feel fast in these shoes. These shoes are for a neutral runner (thought I was an overpronator), and are very light weight. So far, they dont have much cushioning which is the only thing I dont like, but we will see today as I try and run.
Yesterday, my wife finally said YES to doing her first Tri, so this season of the Spartanette training will be working on her Tri training along with weights. I am excited to see her results, I am sure she is going to get in super tip top shape.
My diet has been going good, however I am not dropping LBS like I wish I was. I have not cheated much, but have cheated. Stay tuned for the results on Friday, lets hope for some good numbers. I am starting to sound like someone on the Biggest Loser.
Next week I think the Girls are getting back together for their Spartanette training, but may have to move to the gym on their own while daddy watches Kendall. I need to make sure I work with Girlie on what to do when they are there.
